Erskineville Development on its way

Peter O'Meagher 26 Nov 2011

Leighton Properties and LaSalle Investment Management are preparing to submit a development application for a high quality, inner city residential community on Macdonald Street in Erskineville, NSW.

The proposed scheme is the outcome of a design competition that was conducted in accordance with the City of Sydney’s Competitive Design Policy, with Australian architects SJB being selected as winner.

The 1.6 hectare site lies in the northwest corner of the 17 hectare Ashmore Precinct, an industrial estate designated by the City of Sydney as an urban renewal area.

DESIGN FOR A SENSE OF COMMUNITY
The proposed scheme includes 16 terrace houses and approximately 320 apartments. Proposed heights across the site range from two to eight storeys and are arranged to ensure that the residential feel, solar access to the courtyard and privacy are maintained for homes along the northern boundary, whilst maintaining view corridors and pedestrian comfort within the site.

An early works development application was submitted in November, and  community consultation is well underway. An Open Day was held in late November to give interested residents an opportunity to inspect the current scheme and provide feedback.

Comments on the scheme were welcomed as Leighton Properties and LaSalle continue to seek the best possible outcome for the former industrial site. All feedback is being reviewed and is key in assisting and understanding the main concerns of the community. This feedback will be included in the development application expected to be lodged before the Christmas break. The City of Sydney will put the proposal on public exhibition for 35 days and invite further feedback from the community.

“We have undertaken a process which we believe has taken the overall principles and objectives established by Council but resulted in a terrific and improved outcome for nearby residents and those within the future homes alike. The feedback from residents is appreciated and helps us to refine our ideas and provide guidance to Council for its future planning.” said Gavin Tonnet, National Head of Residential for Leighton Properties. “Even though the consultative process has been underway since late October there is still time for people to have their say before we lodge our DA.”
