Leighton Properties won the Ipswich CBD redevelopment project in December last year after a competitive tender process by Ipswich City Properties (ICP).
The plan revitalises the retail and commercial core of Ipswich with a 55,000 sqm regional shopping centre, an office precinct and modern residential inner-city living for up to 1,000 people. This will be surrounded by significant new riverfront public space and amenities, including a public library and car parking.
The project supports the Queensland Government’s decentralisation strategy to enhance commercial centres around the metropolitan area.
The master plan for Ipswich is based on sustainable design principles and has integrated transport linkages with public transport and a new pedestrian bridge over the Bremer River.
Andrew Borger, Executive Director and State Manager Queensland said “We’re looking forward to delivering this flagship redevelopment that will not only generate economic, cultural and recreational opportunities for Ipswich but will also be the catalyst to ignite major demand for retailing, offices and inner-city living.”
“We believe that with this project the relationship between Brisbane CBD and Ipswich City will soon emulate that of Sydney CBD and Parramatta – particularly with regards to government and private sector office decentralisation.”
Mayor of Ipswich, Councillor Paul Pisasale said “Leighton Properties won the project due to their experience, financial capability, understanding and alignment with Ipswich City Properties’ and Ipswich City Council’s vision for the Ipswich CBD.”
Ipswich is one of the top five Australian national growth areas after recording 5% population growth last year and its population is forecast to double over the next 10 to 15 years. All of this presents fantastic opportunities to strengthen the community spirit through effective social development and planning" he added.
Work is planned to start on the ground by
the end of 2011, with a significant component to be delivered within
five years and employing up to 800 workers.
The project is anticipated to be delivered in further stages over a 15 year period.
